Well, somebody finally found something entertaining to do in Buffalo: beat the Sabres.

The Flyers won 3–1 Wednesday for their third straight victory after an 0–6–3 start. Cole Knuble scored twice in his second NHL game. Welcome to the party, kid. Apparently, you brought the offense.

Before we get into it, watching paint dry is more fun than a night in Buffalo. And I’m speaking from experience. I spent a week there for an old job. A WEEK. That’s enough time to develop a meaningful relationship with the hotel ceiling.

At least the Flyers had a reason to enjoy their visit.

Knuble opened the scoring on a rebound, and Trevor Zegras added a power-play goal before the first intermission. Buffalo’s Jason Zucker cut it to 2–1 late in the second. Then Knuble banked one in off the goalie early in the third.

That second goal? Beautifully obnoxious. The kind you love when your guy scores it and spend twenty minutes bitching about when it happens to your goalie. Give me a kid willing to try something instead of waiting for the perfect invitation.

Joseph Woll finished with 27 saves, and Oliver Bonk supplied two assists. Those contributions deserve some love alongside the rookie’s big night.

Because as much fun as the goals are, somebody has to keep the whole operation standing up at the other end. Vladar did his job. Buy that man dinner. Preferably somewhere outside Buffalo.

The part that still needs cleaning up: the Flyers wasted an extended five-on-three. You get handed that opportunity, you have to make the other team sweat. That’s where you want the killer instinct, especially when you’ve already got a lead.

Still, this was Philadelphia’s first road win of the season, and Knuble scored his first two NHL goals with his parents there. That’s a pretty damn good family night.

I’m not booking a parade because we’ve discovered the concept of winning hockey games. That start happened. Nobody gets to shove it in a drawer and pretend we imagined it.

But I’ll absolutely enjoy this. A young player gives you something to get excited about, your goalie delivers, and you leave with the points. That’s a much better way to spend an evening than inventing new curse words at the television.

Keep giving us reasons to watch, boys.

And Buffalo? Enjoy the paint. Let us know when the second coat drops.
